About this candidate
From evansmithformaryland:My father's mother came to the United States from Fukuoka, Japan after WWII, and married my grandfather soon after. I consider myself sansei, or a member of the third Japanese generation after immigration. Despite my personal privilege growing up in southern California, I witnessed firsthand discrimination against my dad and grandma for their looks, color, and accent. We have made progress in their lifetimes, but I have seen that still more progress needs to be made in ours.
